Militant outfit IS claimed the responsibility for the attack on Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, claimed co-founder of SITE Intelligence Rita Katz.
In a Tweet, she said, “ISIS claims attack in Bangladesh, targeting a police headquarters in capital Dhaka. Marks the group’s 1st attack in the city since Aug 2019 and comes amid an attack surge as part of the 4th wave of its “Battle of Attrition” campaign in lead up Eid-ul-Azha.”
Mentioning that they were aware of the message, the counter terrorism unit of Bangladesh said they were not sure about the authenticity of the information.
When bloggers were killed one after another and the Holey Artisan terror attack took place, SITE Intelligence claimed that those were carried out by IS. However, the claims were not found true.
Israeli-born US citizen Rita Katz is the co-founder of SITE Intelligence which monitors militant activities.
Rita Katz used to once work for Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
Contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Saiful Islam said Rita Katz’s claim came to their notice.
False claims were also made in the past, he said, adding that criminal intention behind the Pallabi Police Station blast as per the information available so far.
The DMP official, however, said they will investigation whether there is any connection of militants with the incident.
Five people, including four policemen, were injured in the explosion inside the police station on Wednesday morning.
