The government has extended the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia by six more months no conditions.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday noon said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the suspension of Khaleda’s sentence from September 25 today following a petition filed by her brother.
The BNP chief can receive treatment in Dhaka but cannot go abroad during this period, he said.
The minister also said the conditions for her release will remain the same.
He said the Law Ministry recommended extending the suspension of the sentence by six months as her family could not arrange her treatment due to the coronavirus prevalence.
Khaleda was sent to jail after she was convicted in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case by a lower court on February 8, 2018.
On March 25 last, the BNP chief was released from jail for six months upon an executive order considering her age and humanitarian grounds following an application by her family.
The six-month tenure of the order is scheduled to end on September 24.
