India's Covid-19 cases crossed the 50-lakh mark with a spike of 90,123 new cases in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry has said.
During the period, the country recorded 1,290 deaths - the highest it has seen in a single day.
The total number of people who have died because of the disease now stands at 80,776.
The Covid-19 fatality rate was at 1.64 per cent.
The total number of coronavirus cases has reached 5,020,360, including 995,933 active cases, which comprises 20.08 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.
India's recovery rate rose to 78.28 per cent. A total of 3,942,361 patients stand cured.
India is the second worst-hit nation in terms of Covid-19 cases after the US.
It is in the third spot in fatalities after the US and Brazil, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
