Vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Nurul Haque Nur was released one hour after his arrest in a rape case on Monday.
He was set free around 9:30pm, said Joint Commissioner of Detective Branch of police Mahbub Alam.
Nur was detained from Shahbagh area around 8:30pm also on charge of attacking police. Later, he was taken to the DB office from where he was freed.
Earlier on Sunday night, a rape case was filed against the Ducsu VP and five other people.
The victim, also a DU female student, filed the case with Lalbagh Police Station, said Assistant Commissioner (Lalbagh zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police KM Roy.
Protesting the filing of the case, Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council staged demonstrations at the foot of Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus.
It was alleged that police were attacked from the protest programme.
