The Italy government has agreed to hire Bangladeshi farm workers, said Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Monday.
Italy has included Bangladesh in their "seasonal and non-seasonal workers programme" responding to a request made by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her Rome visit, he said. “Following the request, the Italian government has provided this opportunity to Bangladeshi nationals.”
The minister said the Italian government withdrew this privilege for Bangladeshi workers as they violated conditions of this programme by not returning home after each season.
Around 18,000 Bangladeshi nationals went to Italy under an agreement between Bangladesh and Italy.
However, less than 100 workers came back in the stipulated time forcing Italy to suspend this programme for Bangladeshis in 2012.
