The supporters of Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury (Nixon Chowdhury), MP, and Kazi Zafarullah could not hold their scheduled rallies in Sadarpur upazila of Faridpur district on Saturday following the imposition of Section 144 by the local administration.
The restriction will remain in force for 24 hours from 9am on Saturday to 9am on Sunday.
The upazila unit of Awami League announced to hold a rally on the upazila parishad premises at 10am on Saturday demanding the trial of Nixon for reportedly issuing threat to the deputy commissioner of the district and using abusive words on upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Charbhadrasan upazila.
Besides, the supporters of Nixon, an independent MP from Faridpur-4 constituency, convened another rally at the same place and same time protesting a case filed against the MP by the Election Commission.
Later, the upazila administration imposed the Section 144 to avert any untoward incident.
Senior Election Officer of Faridpur district Nawabul Islam filed the case against Nixon with Charbhadrasan Police Station on Thursday morning for violating the electoral code of conduct.
Nixon reportedly threatened DC Atul Sarker over the arrest of his supporters during Charbhadrasan upazila parishad by-polls.
He made the threat at a victory rally held in front of Charbhadrasan upazila Awami League office on October 11 after Awami League candidate Md Kawsar Hossain won the election.
