BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday claimed that their party Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been under house arrest.
“Begum Zia is not free. She has been held under house arrest,” he said while addressing a press conference at the BNP chief’s Gulshan office.
Fakhrul said the only difference between staying at her own residence and jail is that she has been able to live in a home atmosphere. There’s nothing else. Actually, she is under house arrest.”
He also said the BNP chief’s condition is not well as she is having problem in receiving treatment due to existing circumstances, including the coronavirus pandemic.
Turning to the by-election held on Saturday, the BNP leader said they participated in the polls only to expose the veil of vote-rigging of the Election Commission and the government.
He said it has been proved that a fair election is not possible under the current government.
Fakhrul also demanded a fresh national election cancelling the results of the 2018 one, not any snap polls.
He alleged that Awami League resorted to a reign of terror and rigging in the by-election to Dhaka-5 and Naogaon-6 constituencies like the national election, demanding re-election.
The BNP secretary general also announced demonstrations at district towns and cities today and thana and unions on Monday to press for the demand.
