The government has refixed the retail price of potato at Tk 35 from Tk 30 to control the market.
The new price came into effect today (Wednesday), said the Director General of the Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM) Mohammed Yousuf on Tuesday following a meeting with businessmen at his office in Khamarbari.
At the meeting, the price of potato was fixed at Tk 30 per kg at the wholesale level while Tk 27 at the cold storage.
The DAM chief also warned that action would be taken if potato is not sold in the government-fixed price.
Earlier on Tuesday noon, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque hinted at raising the potato prices.
On October 7, the DAM fixed the price ceiling at Tk 30 for retailers while Tk 25 for wholesalers.
It set the price at Tk 23 at the cold storage level.
However, traders hiked the potato prices to almost double at 55-60 per kg at the retail level defying the government order.
