A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Mohammad Erfan Salim, suspended councillor from ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Mohammad Salim, and his bodyguard M Zahidul Islam on a three-day remand in a case filed over assaulting a Bangladesh Navy officer.
Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order when police produced them before his court seeking remand in the case.
On Tuesday night, four more cases were filed against Erfan Salim and his associates over the recovery of liquor and firearm during Monday’s raid on his residence.
The Rapid Action Battalion filed the cases with Chawkbazar Police Station, said its officer-in-charge Moudud Hawlader.
Of the cases, two were filed under the Narcotics Control Act and the rest two under the Arms Act.
Meanwhile, the government has suspended Erfan Salim from the councillor post as he has been jailed for possessing drugs and walkie-talkies illegally.
The Local Government Division under the LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry issued a notification on Tuesday in this regard.
The suspension of Erfan came a day after he was sentenced to one-and-half-year imprisonment for possessing drugs and walkie-talkies illegally.
On Monday evening, a Rab mobile court, led by executive magistrate Sarwoer Alam, sentenced Erfan to one-and-half-year imprisonment and his bodyguard Zahidu to six months’ imprisonment over the recovery of liquor and firearm.
The elite force conducted a drive at the residence of Erfan in Old part of the capital following a case filed for assaulting a Bangladesh Navy official.
During the drive that lasted till evening from 12 noon, a firearm, 38 sets of illegal walkie-talkies, 5-6 litres of liquor, 400 Yaba tablets and a number of beer cans were recovered.
They also detained Erfan, his driver Mizanur Rahman and Zahid.
Besides, a team of Detective Branch of police arrested Erfan’s personal assistant AB Siddique Dipu up from Tangail early Tuesday.
The navy official, Col Wasif Ahmed Khan, filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station early Monday.
According to the case statement, a private car hit Wasif's motorcycle near LabAid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm on Sunday while he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.
However, the inmates of the vehicle hurled abuses at him and threatened to kill him when he protested the incident.
Later, some of them came out of the car and physically assaulted the navy officer and verbally abused his wife.
