Even as the vaccinations began, the world continued to buckle under Covid-19 registering record 717,024 cases over the last 24 hours till 10am on Saturday.
In total, the confirmed cases around the world have reached 71,437,330, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer.
This is for the first time that the world saw over 7 lakh cases in a 24-hour period.
Besides, the global death toll from the virus has surged past 16 lakh to reach 1,601,168 after 12,731 more virus-related deaths were registered during the period.
Of the currently infected 20,198,937 patients, 20,092,342 are in mild condition while 106,595 are in serious or critical condition.
So far, 49,637,225 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.
The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 16,295,458 and 302,750 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 9,827,026 and third highest fatalities of 142,662 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 180,453 and third highest cases of 6,836,313.
Bangladesh has so far confirmed 487,849 cases and 6,986 deaths from coronavirus.
