Photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol was released from jail on bail on Friday, around nine months after his arrest.

He walked out of Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj around 11am after bail orders reached the prison, said his lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua.

On December 17, the High Court granted bail to Kajol in two more cases filed under the Digital Security Act, paving the way for his release.

The two cases were filed with Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar police stations in the capital on March 10 and 11 against Kajol.

Earlier on November 24, the High Court granted him bail in another case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital under the Digital Security Act.

MP from Magura-1 constituency Mohammad Shifuzzaman (Shekhor) filed the case against 32 people, including the photojournalist, on March 9 last.

Nearly two months after his disappearance, Kajol was arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on May 2 last for intruding Bangladesh from India through Benapole border without any valid document.

On May 3, the photojournalist was granted bail in a case filed against him for ‘trespassing into Bangladesh from India.

However, he was sent to jail showing him arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

On March 10, the journalist went missing after leaving his office in the capital’s Hatirpool area.

His family had filed a general diary with the Chawkbazar Police Station the following day over his disappearance.
