Voting in the first-phase elections to 24 municipalities began on Monday morning.
The polling that began at 8am with electronic voting machines (EVMs) will continue till 4pm without any break.
Members of different law enforcement agencies were deployed in the election areas while there are magistrates to maintain the law and order.
Candidates from Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Jatiya Ganotantrik Party are vying for the posts of mayor in the municipalities.
Around 1,160 candidates, including 93 for mayoral posts, are contesting the elections.
On November 22, the Election Commission announced the schedule for elections to 25 municipalities in the first phase.
However, election to Sreepur municipality in Gazipur has been postponed following the death of a mayoral aspirant.
