The second batch of 1,772 Rohingyas from crowded cramps in Cox’s Bazar started for Bhasan Char from Chattogram on Tuesday in an effort to relocate the Myanmar’s displaced citizens to the island.
The first ship carrying a group of Rohingyas left the Bangladesh Navy jetty in Patenga around 9:30am for the island in Noakhali's Hatiya upazila.
Later, four more ships with Rohingyas left the jetty.
The authorities were shifting 1,772 Rohingyas from 427 families to the island in the second phase.
The Rohingyas, who were interested to go to Bhasan Char voluntarily, were brought to Ukhiya College ground by minibuses on Monday from different camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf.
According to official sources, over 130 of the Rohingyas who were being shifted to the island in second phase are relatives of those transferred in the first phase
Earlier on December 4, a total of 1,642 Rohingyas were moved to Bhasan Char in the first phase.
Reaching the island, Rohingyas had expressed their happiness after seeing the arrangement there. "Alhamdulillah, we’re very happy to arrive in Bhasan Char as the accommodation is excellent here. We never thought that so a beautiful place and so many facilities were waiting for us,” said one Syed Ullah.
