A Sylhet tribunal on Tuesday accepted charges against eight leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in a case filed over the gang-rape of a young woman after confining her husband to a room of an MC College dormitory in Sylhet.
Judge M Mohitul Haque of the Women and Children Prevention Tribunal took cognisance of the charge-sheet against them.
The charge-sheeted accused -- Saifur Rahman, Tarequl Islam Tareque, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Arjun Laskar, Rabiul Islam, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Misbaur Rahman alias Rajon and Ainuddin -– were produced before the court during the hearing.
On December 3 last, police pressed charges against the BCL men in the case.
The National University (NU) earlier revoked the studentship and certificates of four of them -– Saifur, Rony, Rabiul and Mahfuz.
A group of BCL leaders and activists gang-raped the young woman after confining her husband to a room of MC College hostel in Sylhet on September 25.
The victim’s husband filed a case with Shah Poran Police Station against six named and three unmanned people.
Sources said the young couple went to visit the MC College campus in the evening when a group of BCL men picked them up and took them to the hostel.
They confined the victim’s husband to a room and raped her in turns.
On information, police rescued the couple around 11pm.
