A BNP-backed councillor-elect has been stabbed to death allegedly by followers of a defeated candidate in Sirajganj municipality.
The deceased was identified as Tariqul Islam, 45, who won the election from ward-6 on Saturday. He was son of Abdul Quddus of Bhangabari of the municipality.
Witnesses said on information that the supporters of rival candidate Shahdat Hossain Buddin obstructed publication of the results at Shahidganj centre, Tariqul rushed there.
Later, the results were published declaring him winner by 85 votes.
At one stage of altercation between the two candidates, Tariqul was stabbed in the abdomen.
He was taken to Sirajganj General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
