A Khulna tribunal on Monday sentenced five people to life imprisonment in an explosive case filed over the murder of journalist Humayun Kabir Balu.
Judge Saifuzzaman Hero of the Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the morning.
Four of the convicts were present at the dock while the other was tried in absentia.
Humayun Kabir Balu, editor of the Dainik Janmabhumi and also a freedom fighter, was killed in a bomb attack in front of his residence at Haji Ismail Road in Khulna city on June 27, 2004.
The following day, two cases -- one for the murder and another under the Explosive Substances Act – were filed.
On February 13, 2008, a Khulna speedy trial tribunal acquitted all seven accused of the murder charge for not having witnesses and evidence.
