Around 50 BNP leaders and activists were arrested over chase and counter-chase with police before their scheduled rally was foiled in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Saturday.
Confirming the arrest to Somoy News, Assistant Commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Sheikh M Shahmim said many of the detainees might be released after scrutiny.
“Those who are facing specific charges will be sent to court after being sued,” he said.
BNP called the rally in protest against the decision of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council to scrap the ‘Bir Uttam’ gallantry title of party founder Ziaur Rahman.
BNP leaders and activists engaged in an altercation with police when they tried to keep the traffic normal.
At one stage, they pelted brickbats at law enforcers, leading to a chase and counter-chase.
Later, their rally foiled as police charged baton on them.
BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were, among others, present.
