A Dhaka court on Thursday acquitted Mohammad Erfan Salim, suspended councillor from ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Mohammad Salim, of charges in connection with an arms case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Session’s Judge KM Emrul Kayesh passed the order after accepting the final report submitted by police in the case filed with Chawkbazar Police Station, said Additional Public Prosecutor Taposh Kumar Paul.
On January 5 last, Inspector (Investigation) Muhammad Delwar Hossain of the police station, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the final report recommending that Erfan Salim be exonerated of the charges.
On November 4 last, Erfan was sent to jail in a case filed over assaulting a Bangladesh Navy officer following two terms of remand.
The navy official, Col Wasif Ahmed Khan, filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on October 26 for assaulting him physically.
According to the case statement, a private car hit Wasif's motorcycle near LabAid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm on October 25 while he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.
However, the inmates of the vehicle hurled abuses at him and threatened to kill him when he protested the incident.
Later, some of them came out of the car and physically assaulted the navy officer and verbally abused his wife.
On October 26, a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), led by executive magistrate Sarwoer Alam, sentenced Erfan to one-and-half-year imprisonment and his bodyguard M Zahidul Islam to six months’ imprisonment over the recovery of liquor and firearm following a drive at his house.
The elite force conducted a drive at the residence of Erfan in Old part of the capital following a case filed for assaulting a Bangladesh Navy official.
A firearm, 38 sets of illegal walkie-talkies, 5-6 litres of liquor, 400 Yaba tablets and a number of beer cans were also recovered.
They also detained Erfan, his driver Mizanur Rahman and Zahid.
On October 27, the government suspended Erfan Salim from the councillor post as was jailed for possessing drugs and walkie-talkies illegally.
