The second consignment of 20 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine arrived in the country from India early Tuesday.

A special flight of Spice Jet carrying the vaccine doses landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 12:30am.

From the airport, the vaccine doses were taken to the warehouse of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd, the local distributor of the Serum Institute of India, in Gazipur in freezer vans.

Bangladesh signed a deal with the Serum Institute of India to procure 3 crore doses of vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca through Beximco.

The first consignment of 50 lakh doses arrived in the country on January 25 last.

Besides, India gave Bangladesh another 20 lakh doses as a gift.

A total of 2,308,157 people have received their first doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca (Covishield) vaccine in the country as of Monday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the vaccination programme virtually on January 27 when 26 front-line fighters received Covishield vaccine in Kurmitola General Hospital. Some 541 more received the vaccine in five hospitals in Dhaka the following day.
