Friendship is an interesting kind of love. There's no contract legally binding you two together, there's no unspoken rule about loving each other unconditionally, and there's no real binding commitment to the opposite person other than what you are willing to put in to the relationship.
But maybe these are the reasons why our friendships are so valuable. The option is always there to back out at any time, and yet, with the really, really authentic ones, we never do.
Because at the end of the day -- after the breakups and divorces and estrangements -- we choose the companions we want in our lives, and they are the ones worth sticking around for.
There are certain qualities that must be shared in order to form the bonds of good and true friendship.
Accepting: Great friends are accepting, even when their lives diverge from your own. They will understand that your choices are your own, and see that what’s right for them isn’t necessarily right for you.
Good listeners: It is essential for a friend to be a good listener. If your friends feel that you do not listen or have any interest in their lives, they will not confide in you. Without the ability to listen, your friendship will be shallow.
Being compassionate: true friends should always be compassionate. They should be able to sympathize regardless of whether or not they agree with the crisis their friends are facing
Loyalty: True friends should always be loyal. A good friend should never betray you in any way, talk about you behind your back nor do anything else that questions your friendship.
Trust: Good friends should be trustworthy. One should have friends that you can be able to tell all your secrets without the fear of them telling other people about them later.
Support: Good friends should always be supportive at all times. You should have friends that you can be sure is going to stand behind you regardless of the situation or problem that you are facing.
Inspiring: A good friend teaches you how to become a better person.
Good friends are your real-life guide to becoming the best version of yourself. They will inspire you to be a better person just by learning how to be a more caring, loving and kind individual. With their example, they will help you realize that you have a lot more to offer.
Caring: A good friend will remind you to be good to yourself.
A good friend is that person who will remind you to love yourself more. This is true especially if you’re in a toxic romantic relationship. They will remind you every day to look after yourself more and to be good to yourself first instead of slowly breaking your heart because of a toxic partner.
Reliable: A good friend is one that you can rely on for anything. All your friends should be able to trust you to show up for any of their important events and to do any task that they have assigned you to or that you have agreed on.
