It is sad but true that many of the best tasting foods are the worst for us. That’s because they are artificially constructed to ramp up the flavors we naturally crave – sugar and salt – to levels never found in nature. In other cases, it is the growing or packaging processes that cut corners and put consumers’ health at risk.

1. Canned Tomatoes

Tomatoes are believed to be exceptionally dangerous due to their high acidity, which seems to cause BPA to leech from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves. The level of BPA can be so high in fact; you should seriously consider not feeding them to children. Due to FDA laws, there are no standards for labeling BPA so simply because a can does not say it has it does not mean that it does not contain BPA. Be safe and avoid cans. Cook fresh or buy glass bottles.

2. Pickled vegetables

We have been taught since we are little that vegetables are healthy and generally good for our health. But according to Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, if they’re pickled, they may be doing more harm than good. Pickled vegetables are generally believed to increase the risk of gastric cancer.

3. Sodas

Sodas use carbon to have a longer shelf life. Such beverages have major causes of hypertension, diabetes, and kidney stones. Cola beverages have phosphoric acid. Carbonated water increase ghrelin – the hunger hormone, which can trigger colon cancer. Sugary soda causes obesity. Obesity is a major cause of chronic cancer diseases today.

4. Microwave popcorn

Popcorn in general is a relatively healthy snack, so it’s really too bad that the most convenient way of popping it actually makes it extremely unhealthy. The reason is that those microwave bags are lined with a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).Many studies have revealed that consuming PFOA can cause cancers of the kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, and testicles.

5. Refined White Flour

Oprah famously lost a lot of weight by cutting out anything white, especially the big culprit – white flour. You may have heard it’s bad for you, but you probably don’t realize that chemically-bleaching flour with chlorine gas kills all of it’s healthy nutrients. Chlorine gas can be deadly when inhaled, so why would we want it in our dinner? White flour also contains a high glycemic rate, which raises blood sugar and insulin levels and can directly cause diabetes. Cancerous tumors feed on sugar in the bloodstream, so by avoiding refined grains like processed white flour, you can avoid or starve deadly tumors.

6. Potato chips

They may be cheap, easy and delicious, but these crispy, addicting snacks can also be deadly. These fatty foods don’t only cause weight gain because of their high trans-fat content, they also have excessive sodium levels, which cause high blood pressure and artificial flavors, preservatives and colors. Another risk is the presence of acrymalide, a known carcinogen found in cigarettes. Try not to feed these quick snacks to yourself or your kids and choose pretzels, air-popped popcorn or baked apple chips instead.

7. Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils, which cannot be naturally extracted like olive oil, soy or canola oil, they must be chemically removed. They are commonly used in many foods in your pantry to preserve and keep their shelf life, yet they are also linked to cancer, birth defects, heart disease and many other fatalities. NEVER cook with hydrogenated oils and check your labels for healthy oils like olive, soy and canola instead.

 8. Preserved eggs

The use of lead in preserving eggs is one of its major safety concerns. Lead, even in tiny amounts, can be toxic to humans—especially when ingested. Before consuming preserved eggs, do your research and find out if lead has been used in its processing.

9. Refined sugars

Cancer cells love refined sugars, which spike insulin levels and and promote cancer growth. High-fructose corn syrup is considered the worst offender and it’s found in any sweet you can think of. It’s been known for a long time that cancer cells feed off of sugar, so with so many people addicted to sugary treats, it’s no wonder why cancer rates have skyrocketed.

10. Dirty Vegetables and Fruits

Dirty vegetables and fruits are those that are tainted with pesticides. The research of Canadian Cancer Association advises a viable connection of pesticides with cancers such as multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, prostate, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, pancreatic, lung, non-melanoma skin cancers and testicular. Also, the studies of pesticides and childhood cancer say that there might be a possibility of connection with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia
