The death toll from the coronavirus in Italy leapt by 743 on Tuesday, taking the total death toll in the country to 6,820.
According to the Italian Civil Protection Department, the total number of cases in the European country worst hit by the virus rose to 69,176.
Of those originally infected nationwide, 8,326 had fully recovered. There were 3,396 people in intensive care.
The hardest-hit northern region of Lombardy remained in a critical situation, with a total of 4,178 deaths and 30,703 cases.
