Spain now has the world’s second-highest tally of coronavirus deaths with 738 more reported on Wednesday, a daily record.
With a total of 3,434 deaths from the coronavirus, Spain surpassed China’s official death toll of 3,285.
Infections in Spain also rose 20 percent from a day earlier to 47,610.
Spain's rate of infection has increased by a fifth and almost 27,000 people are being treated in hospital.
Madrid is the country's worst affected region but Catalonia in the north-east has seen a rapid increase in cases.
Italy still has the most deaths of any nation in the world with 7,503 with the 683 new deaths reported on Wednesday.
Besides, the European country worst hit by coronavirus has a total of 74,386 infections.
