The government has extended the general holidays by 7 more days until April 9 to prevent the coronavirus outbreak.
As per the fresh decision, the general holidays have been extended till April 9 while April 10 and 11 are weekly holidays.
The Public Administration Ministry issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hinted that the ongoing general holiday might be extended to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Bangladesh.
She made the hint while addressing officials of all 64 districts through videoconferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban.
The government last week announced public holiday from March 29 to April 2 with the deployment of army personnel for limiting the public gatherings and mass transports to check the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The five-day general holiday, however, automatically turned into a 10-day vacation because they coincide with the public holiday on the occasion of the Independence Day on March 26 and the weekends on March 27-28 and April 3-4.
The Prime Minister also directed for suspending all programmes to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla calendar, on April 14.
“Public gatherings might bring great danger due to the prevailing coronavirus situation. It won’t be wise for us to do anything which invites public gatherings to celebrate Pahela Baishakh. However, programmes might be arranged digitally,” she said.
The videoconference was arranged to coordinate the ongoing activities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Bangladesh has so far reported six deaths from the coronavirus and 54 infected patients with the virus.
