Coronavirus: Jail authorities propose releasing 3,000 prisoners

The Department of Prison has proposed the government to release around 3,000 general prisoners in the country due to lack of accommodation and to tackle the coronavirus situation.

The prison department placed the proposal to the Home Ministry on Wednesday.

As the coronavirus pandemic spread across the globe, different countries released ordinary prisoners as an effort to contain the virus.

Six people have so far died from coronavirus in the country while 54 others tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, the jail authorities have taken various steps, including placing new inmates under a mandatory 14-day quarantine, in all jails across the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus among prisoners.  

Around 89,000 prisoners are there in 68 jails throughout the country against the total capacity of 40,100.

The global death toll from the coronavirus or COVID-19 has reached 42,151 as of Wednesday.
 
It has so far infected 858,669 people around the world, according to worldometer.
 
Of them, 638,419 are currently being treated with 32,898 being in serious or critical condition.
 
So far, 220,250 cases had outcomes and of them, 178,099 recovered.
