Coronavirus cases leap by record 2,911 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has recorded its highest daily rise in coronavirus infections since the outbreak began in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported a further 2,911 cases in the past 24 hours. In total, 52,445 infections have been confirmed in the country as of Tuesday.

Besides, 37 more deaths from coronavirus were registered during the period, taking the death toll in the country to 709. Of the deceased, 33 are men while four are women.

This is the highest daily surge in coronavirus cases in Bangladesh since the first three cases were reported on March 8. Previous highest 2,523 cases were recorded on May 29.

DGHS Additional Director General Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure in the daily online health bulletin in the afternoon. 

She said 523 more patients recovered from COVID-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 11,120.

Prof Nasima said highest 12,704 samples were tested in 52 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 333,073 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 22.91 percent, she said.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 21 percent while the mortality rate is 1.35 percent in the country.

On Monday, Bangladesh reported 22 deaths from coronavirus and 2,381 cases.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 377,515 as of Tuesday morning.

Besides, it has so far infected 6,370,471 people around the world, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 3,088,324 patients, 3,034,921 are in mild condition while 53,403 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 2,904,632 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.
