Bangladesh’s coronavirus death toll exceeds 700

It took less than three months for the deadly coronavirus to claim the lives of over 700 people in Bangladesh, according to official data.

Coronavirus-related fatalities exceeded 600 in the country on Saturday last, the next 100 deaths were added in just three days with 37 ones in the last 24 hours as of Tuesday afternoon. The highest 40 deaths in a single day were reported in the country on Sunday last.

Bangladesh also went past two grim Covid-19 milestones on Tuesday, crossing the 50,000 mark overall and breaching the 2,900-figure in its daily tally for the first time.

In a press briefing in the afternoon, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said the 37 more people died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the death toll in the country to 709.
Of the dead, 33 are men while four are women.

Chattogram for the first time saw the highest causalities with 15 deaths in the last 24 hours. Besides, 10 died in Dhaka while four in Sylhet, three 3 in Barishal, two each in Rajshahi and Rangpur and one in Mymensingh the same day.

Prof Nasima said 2,911 more people tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

With 2,911 new cases, the tally of positive cases in the country increased to 52,445.

This is the highest daily surge in coronavirus cases in Bangladesh since the first three cases were reported on March 8. Previous the highest 2,523 cases were recorded on May 29.

She said 523 more patients recovered from COVID-19 disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 11,120.

She said highest 12,704 samples were tested in 52 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 333,073 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 22.91 percent, she said.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 21 percent while the mortality rate is 1.35 percent in the country.

On Monday, Bangladesh reported 22 deaths from coronavirus and 2,381 cases.

Meanwhile, the global death toll from coronavirus has reached 377,515 as of Tuesday morning.

Besides, it has so far infected 6,370,471 people around the world, according to Worldometer.
