Bangladesh’s coronavirus count breached the 141,000-mark on Monday as country registered its highest-ever daily spike in fresh infections in the last 24 hours.
Prof Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said 4,014 more people tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours as of 2:30pm on Monday.
This is the biggest jump in daily coronavirus cases in the country since the first three cases were reported on March 8.
The second highest 4,008 cases were registered in the country on June 17 while third highest 3,946 ones were recorded on June 25. With this, the daily coronavirus cases in the country crossed the 4,000 mark for the 2nd time.
Speaking at a press briefing, Nasima Sultana said the total number of coronavirus cases in the country now increased to, 141,801 with the fresh ones.
She said 17,837 samples were tested in 65 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 751,034 samples have so far been tested in the country.
In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 22.50 percent while the infection rate 18.96 against total tests carried out so far, she said.
Besides, Prof Dr Nasima said 45 more people died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, climbing the death toll in the country to 1,783.
Of the new deceased, 36 are men while nine are women.
Dhaka witnessed the highest causalities with 22 deaths in the last 24 hours.
Besides, 10 died in Chattogram, five in Khulna, three each in Sylhet and Barishal and one each in Mymensingh and Rajshahi divisions during the same day.
Nasima said 2,053 more patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 57,780.
The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 40.75 while the mortality rate is 1.26 percent.
On Sunday, Bangladesh recorded 40 deaths from coronavirus and 3,809 cases.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases kept surging across the globe reaching 10,243,859 as of Monday morning.
Besides, the virus has claimed the lives of 504,410 people in different countries, according to Worldometer.
Of the currently infected 4,185,954 patients, 4,128,284 are in mild condition while 57,670 are in serious or critical condition.
So far, 5,553,495 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.
