State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said the launch capsize in the River Buriganga is a deliberate murder incident, not an accident.
Talking to reporters while visiting the rescue operation at Sadarghat, he also said the government is going to launch an investigation into the incident to identify whether there is any negligence on the part of the launch owners.
“After watching the CCTV footage, it seems that it’s not an accident, it’s a deliberate murder incident,” the junior minister said.
He said a probe committee has already been formed, and they will take proper action based on its report.
The government has already announced that each family of the deceased will get Tk 1.5 lakh from the river disaster fund of BIWTA, he said.
At least 32 people died as the double-deck ‘Morning Bird’ launch coming from Munshiganj sank in the Buriganga River after being hit by Chandpur-bound vessel ‘Mayur-2’ while anchoring the Kathpatti ghat on Monday morning.
