Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has got all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to conduct fast and effective patrols and curb cross-border crime, smugglings of illegal firearms, explosives, Yaba pills and other drugs from neighbouring countries.

An ATV is defined as a motorized off-highway vehicle designed to travel on four low-pressure or non-pneumatic tires, having a seat designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control.

An area of 328 km among the 4,426 km border of Bangladesh with India and Myanmar has been identified as particularly risky. The BGB has taken steps to establish and expand state-of-the-art 'Smart Digital Surveillance and Tactical Border Response Systems' in these particularly high-risk and sensitive border areas to provide impeccable security, surveillance and counter international crime.

It may be mentioned that surveillance systems have already been set up in the 23 km area of Putkhali in Jashore district and Teknaf border in Cox's Bazar district.

Besides, 45 km from Damdamiya to Unchiprang on the Teknaf border, from Unchiprang to Palangkhali, from Palangkhali to Baishphandi, 15 km from Hapania border in Naogaon district, 15 km from Hili to Kaya in Dinajpur district and 15 km from Masudpur  to Koya in Chapainawabganj district are also under the system.

The ATVs have been added to the BGB to reach the paramilitary force members on the spot based on the information obtained from the 'Smart Digital Surveillance and Tactical Border Response System' in order to maintain the overall law and order and economic stability of the country. The ATVs have also been added to conduct regular patrols on the  remote  and unconventional roads, said BGB headquarters’ Public Relations Officer Shariful Islam.

All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are well suited for plying the muddy narrow roads, sandy pastures, various reservoirs including canals, hilly roads and any inaccessible road. Also, due to their light weight, it is possible to heli-drop the ATVs specified in special operations by helicopter. This capability of the BGB is likely to play an active role in curbing cross-border crime (prevention of various drug smuggling and human trafficking, including arms, yaba, etc.) as well as reducing border killings, the BGB PRO said.
