Confirmed coronavirus cases in Bangladesh have surged to 263,503 with the registration of 2,996 more infections in the past 24 hours till Tuesday.

Besides, 33 more people succumbed to the deadly virus during the period to take the total death toll in the country to 3,471.

Of the new deceased, 28 are men and five are women. Among the total dead, 2,749 or 79.20 percent are men while 722 or 20.80 are women.

Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), came up with the information in the daily online health bulletin in the afternoon.

She said 1,535 more patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of people making recovery to 151,972.

Prof Nasima said 14,820 samples were tested in 84 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 1,287,988 samples have so far been tested in the country.

In comparison with the tests conducted in the last 24 hours, the infection rate is 20.22 percent while the infection rate 20.46 against total tests carried out so far, she said.

The DGHS additional director general also said against the total number of detected cases, the recovery rate is 57.67 while the mortality rate is 1.32 percent.

On Monday, Bangladesh reported 39 deaths from coronavirus and 2,907 cases.

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases across the world have reached 20,257,966 as of Tuesday noon.

Besides, the virus has so far claimed the lives of 738,956 people around the globe, according to Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 6,396,447 patients, 6,331,908 are in mild condition while 64,539 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 13,122,563 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 5,251,446 and 166,192 respectively while Brazil is in the 2nd position with 3,057,470 cases and 101,857 deaths and India reported third highest 2,269,052 infections.
