Bangladesh on Wednesday logged a further 2,156 infections from coronavirus, bringing the total caseload to 454,146. 

Besides, deaths related to the highly contagious pathogen, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19, have reached 6,487 after the health authorities reported 39 casualties during the period.

Of the new deceased, 27 are men and 12 are women. Among the total dead, 4,982 or 76.8 percent are men while 1,505 or 23.2 percent are women.

Currently, there are 78,480 active cases in the country. 

Bangladesh reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 8 last while the first death on March 18.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.

As per the press release, 2,302 more patients recuperated in the last 24 hours to take the total recoveries in the country to 369,179. 

During the period, 16,001 samples were tested in 117 labs across the country. With this, a total of 2,696,150 samples have so far been tested in the country.

The positivity rate -- an indicator of the prevalence of the disease -- was recorded at 13.47 percent in the last 24 hours while the overall positivity rate is 16.84 percent.

The recovery rate in Bangladesh stands at 81.29 percent.

Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.43 percent.

On Tuesday, the country reported 32 deaths and 2,230 infections from coronavirus after testing 15,018 samples with a positivity rate of 14.85 percent.

Meanwhile, reported Covid-19 cases around the world have reached 60,105,736 as of 10am on Wednesday.

Besides, the virus has so far claimed the lives of 1,414,868 people across the globe, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 17,137,103 patients, 17,033,597 are in mild condition while 103,506 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 41,553,765 people have made recovery from the disease in different countries.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 12,955,007 and 265,891 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 9,222,216 and third highest fatalities of 134,743 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 170,179 and third highest cases of 6,121,449.
