Describing BNP founder Ziaur Rahman as the patron of the Bangabandhu assassination, Jatiya Muktijoddha Council has decided to scrap his freedom fighter gallantry award.
At a meeting on Tuesday, it was also decided the cancel the gallantry awards of four convicted killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Besides, the name of Khandker Mustaque Ahmad will be dropped from list of distinguished personalities who made contributions to the Liberation War.
Ziaur Rahman was conferred with Bir Uttam award for his contribution to the Liberation War.
The four fugitive killers are Nur Chowdhury, Shariful Haque Dalim, Rashed Chowdhury and Moslehuddin.
The decision will not be sent to the Liberation War Affairs Ministry which will issue a gazette in this regard.
Bir Bikram was added with the name of Noor Chowdhury while Bir Uttam with Dalim, and Bir Pratik with Rashed and Moslehuddin as per the list of the Liberation War Affairs Ministry and gazette.
On November 19, 2009, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty of 12 convicted former army officials for the assassination of Bangabandhu and his family members.
Of them, five killers of Bangabandhu -– Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Mohiuddin Ahmed –- were hanged in January 2010.
Captain (dismissed) Abdul Majed was hanged on April 12 last while another killer Aziz Pasha met natural death in Zimbabwe in 2001.
Five of the convicted killers have been hiding in different countries. The other fugitive killer is former Lt Col Khandaker Abdur Rashid.
