Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has talked to him about the release of their party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
During the talks, the BNP leader also urged Quader to discuss the issue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.
While talking to reporters at the Dhanmondi political office of the AL chief, the ruling party leader said no written application has been made yet either from BNP or her family over the release of Khaleda Zia.
He also said the government would have considered the matter had it been a political case. "As the case is a corruption one, the matter depends on the court."
Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said the BNP chief can appeal to the Home Ministry for release on parole.
He said the government is looking into the proper treatment of Khaleda Zia.
Physicians are not describing her condition as being described by her party, Quader said.
About the reshuffle in the Cabinet, he said it was done to bring dynamism into the work. "It's the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister."
