Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp has passed 2 billion users, becoming the third app to pass the number after the Facebook app and YouTube app.
There are currently 7.7 billion on the planet, meaning that more than a quarter of the world uses WhatsApp.
Despite never gaining widespread popularity in the United States, Canada and Australia, WhatsApp is the most effective messaging app worldwide. As of January 2019, WhatsApp was the most popular messaging app in 112 countries, with the top Facebook messenger app in 57 countries.
Facebook celebrates the milestone by emphasizing WhatsApp's security. The app includes end-to-end encryption by default to prevent spy messages.
Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014. User statistics suggest that the acquisition was inspiring. With WhatsApp and Messenger, Facebook is the dominant worldwide messaging service provider.
